BILE REFLUX MONITORING - BILEREFLUX.CO.UK
Bile Reflux Monitoring
Bile reflux has been implicated in the pathogenesis of Barrett's Oesophagus. Gastro oesophageal reflux disease is typically thought of as an acid reflux problem. However, studies have shown that bile reflux can be a contributing factor in oesophageal complications of the disease. Incidence of Barrett’s oesophagus and oesophageal adenocarcinoma is greater among patients with bile reflux and excessive duodenogastric reflux has been implicated in the etiology of antral gastric ulcers and gastritis.
BILITEC™ 2000
Bilitec 2000 is currently the only commercially available device that is proven effective in measuring bile reflux. Bilitec 2000 is an ambulatory system that detects bilirubin based on its spectrophotometric properties. Using bilirubin as a marker for bile, Bilitec 2000 records the frequency and duration of bile exposure in either the stomach or the oesophagus over a 24-hour period.
Combined with 24-hour pH testing, Bilitec 2000 gives a more comprehensive profile of a patient’s reflux disease. It can help identify patients with a bile component to their reflux and who are thus at greater risk for developing complications of the disease such as Barrett’s oesophagus and oesophageal adenocarcinoma.
Is it really acid reflux? Is acid reflux the whole problem or just part of it?
Combined pH and bile testing using Bilitec 2000 provides the answers, resulting in more precise diagnosis and better patient management. |
